Marriage and family are central values to Catholics. In recent years, the advance of legal recognition for gay marriage and civil unions have led many Catholic and other Christian leaders to campaign against it, presenting the problem as a defence of “the family” against secular libertinism. There have been numerous references to “traditional marriage” and the “biblical teaching”, and claims that marriage has “always” been between one man and one woman, and we cannot “redefine” marriage.
